Southwest Elementary Project Details:
Following a $68.9 million referendum in 2018, ISD 318 (Grand Rapids Area Schools) funded the construction of two new elementary schools, major renovations at Cohasset Elementary, and strategic repurposing of existing facilities.
As a result of this plan, Southwest Elementary was transformed into a multi-purpose hub designed to meet the district’s evolving needs. Partnering with ICS, the district converted the building to house the district office, Community Education programs, and the Alternative Learning Center (ALC). The renovation included the strategic reconfiguration of existing spaces to support administrative functions, improved safety and security, flexible learning environments, improved public access and public restrooms, and refreshed interior finishes.
In addition, a dedicated space was renovated to support staff trainings, professional development, and school board meetings, further strengthening the building’s role as a centralized district resource. Site improvements included the construction of a new parking lot to improve access and circulation.
The existing air handler units, variable air volume units, controls, and the vast majority of ductwork were retained, culminating in an under-budget project.
This project reflects ISD 318’s commitment to modernizing learning environments and fostering community engagement. By repurposing Southwest Elementary, the district optimized existing resources, enhanced operational efficiency, and strengthened its ability to deliver high-quality education and services for years to come.
