Internship Experience with Luke Selken

The Discover Program

The Discover Program challenges potential interns to join us to find out the real deal. Only they can decide if what we’re telling them at career fairs and interviews matches up with our actual company, actual opportunities, actual culture. We want our interns to discover what it’s like to take part in some of the most innovative engineering and construction projects in our region. We want them to discover what it means to be a part of a company who cares.

One intern who took the challenge this past summer was Luke Selken. Luke is a senior at North Dakota State University majoring in Industrial Engineering and Management. While at ICS, he worked as a Project Manager Intern.

Projects Worked On:

Luke had the opportunity to work on the New St. Cloud Technical High School in St. Cloud, MN. This facility will stretch over 318,000 square feet and will be able to accommodate 1,600 students in grades nine through twelve. Luke discovered what it was like to update project schedules, create estimates, and complete requests for information.

Valuable Lessons Learned:

Through Luke’s internship experience, he has realized the importance of learning Procore – the primary program utilized by project managers. He also learned documentation, photography, and time management are crucial elements of the construction process and lead to successful project completion. Additionally, Luke says he will walk away from this internship with stronger problem solving and communication skills.

Selken said, “I started this internship not knowing much about construction management, but now I feel confident with any task I face.”

“The combinations of lessons learned have been the biggest takeaway for me,” Selken said, “I really enjoy the people I work with. Best job I’ve had!”

Leaving an Impact:

Luke has impacted ICS and our clients in a positive way. He explains, “The quality and effort I put into my work effects everyone onsite and it also affects everyone that will use the school in the future.”
